Teyana Taylor Talks Industry Up & Downs

The multi-talented Teyana Taylor visited The Breakfast Club to discuss her career, her release from Pharrell’s music label Star Trek and the rumors around her sexuality.

Angela recalls seeing Teyana on My Super Sweet Sixteen as a choreographer which was also the time she signed with Pharrell‘s recording label, Star Trek. However, after the signing to the label everyone wants to know when the album’s coming.

“I think that’s another thing, the ‘Sweet Sixteen’ kinda made it hard because soon as I got signed I had the sweet sixteen and it was automatic, ‘Okay where is the music?’ So I didn’t get the chance to have that process where it takes an artist three years to finally get it poppin with it being all the drama behind it. So I came out with a buzz and got signed immediately and it was like, ‘We need it here today.’ So it didn’t matter,” Teyana explained.

Although separated, Teyana continues to maintain a healthy relationship with Pharrell. When asked about her contract release from Star Trek, she states:

“It was natural artist things that makes it harder. I was going through something that every artist goes through and it just happened that everybody knew who I was while I was going through that. It was just so much going on and being signed to Star Trek, Interscope for six years, has been a blessing. I’m actually kinda happy that things didn’t work out when I was younger because I wasn’t that mature and I didn’t know the industry as much as I do now. I’ve now grown not to take anything personal in this ugly industry.”

Envy then questioned what label Teyana is signed to:

“I’m a free agent; I’m in a Lebron situation and I’m tryna see where I’m gonna take my talents. The fact that I finally got my release in and by the way, I was not dropped, I got an official release that me and my team asked for because I felt like before I can go any further with anything or with any label, that I needed to find myself as an artist and I needed to put out music for free. I felt like the people have been waiting for that and deserve that and I have a point to prove, I’m not one of them artists’ that’s comfortable with just being popular. I’m an entertainer, I’m a director, I’m a dancer, I’m an artist first.”

While Teyana plans to work on herself before signing with another label, she’s bewn crafting her sound as an artist and will release an EP titled The Misunderstanding of Teyana Taylor, expected to drop February 29th. We’ll also be seeing Teyana acting in a Western inspired indie film Gang of Roses 2.

Here’s what she had to say about the alleged altercation with the director:

“I just can’t wait ’til the movie comes out, so I can get my parts and add it to my reel. I ain’t gon’ front, I got all the way into character, like I had my little hats and stuff. It was a five day shoot and they asked if I could do it and I thought, ‘It will be good to show another side.'” But would the director cut her out the scenes in the post-production of the film? “Nah, I did all my own stunts so it was too poppin’, I was flipping with the guns. No, he couldn’t even cut me, he couldn’t even cut me.”

Teyana also explained why she accepted the role: “When I heard that it was a western, I didn’t care who was in it, who directing it. I cared that I just did a film where I was a babymother. A lot of actresses will get into a character and they tend to always play those characters in every movie.”

The topic of sexuality came up as Charlamagne asked if she’s ever felt the need to address rumors from blogs that stated she was gay. “I just think it’s funny when I first came out as an artist, mind you I’m only 15 years old so the fact that I was actually dressing my age, I was gay to the world. But now everybody is wearing sneakers and stuff. It’s sexy, the new tomboy thing is in now, it just really bugs me out. It’s actually better for me so they can stay out of my business for when I am dating.”
