Ron Artest checked in with The Breakfast Club to discuss his new name, upcoming comedy tour, Queensbridge, the Lakers, Basketball Wives, and more!
Ron said that he thought about changing his name for a while, and that Chad OchoCinco was a big influence in him doing so. “I swagger jacked him a little” he said referring to OC. He thought about other names including One Love, Queensbridge, & Defense. He talks about how he finally decided on the name Metta World Peace.
He discusses finding out from someone on the street when he was traded to Houston in ’08. He talks about the L.A. Lakers playoff loss to the Dallas Mavericks, and gives his reaction to Skip Bayless’ comments calling him soft.
He talks about being done with the thug shit saying, “I was thugged out years ago, I’m done with that… we trying to be inspirational.” Envy asked him how he never got mixed up with the drug game growing up in Queensbridge. It does hit close to home for him, his brother just got home from doing a 10-year bid.
Angela asked him about his upcoming comedy tour. He said he’s not going to do much stand up, but that he’ll be introducing the comedians to the stage. He discusses his rap career and Charlamagne tells him he’s “the only person from Queensbridge that can’t rap.”
He talks about raffling off his championship ring for “mental health awareness for kids. “ He’s been seeing a therapist since he was 13 years old. He said he sees one now because he gets nervous during games. He flew out his therapist before Game 7 of the Finals a couple years back! He gives his feelings about the Lakers new coach, Mike Brown.
Angela asked him about his wife appearing on Basketball Wives LA. He said he has no problem with it. “My wife works hard. I been with her since I was 14 years old. If she wants to shine, go shine.” He said he won’t be appearing on the show and talks about what he think’s of Khloe & Lamar’s show.
