Teyana Taylor, while many are confused by her role as an entertainer, “The Misunderstanding of Teyana Taylor,” proves that she’s a developed singer/songwriter.

For the majority of the mixtape, Teyana proves her ability as a singer on standout songs like “Gatekeeper,” “Mystery Lover,” “You Know” and “Make You Move,” with room to grow.

Thankfully, the ‘tape isn’t overwhelmed with auto-tune, guest-features (there are only four), or music production to match what’s currently on the radio. This independent artist, who’s no longer with Star Trak nor is she with G.O.O.D Music, only wants to share her personal identity without any assistance.

Even though she’s left Interscope, her song “Complicated” (No. 9) has survived the transition. “Complicated” was featured on her 2009 effort, Star Trak Presents…From A Planet Called Harlem: The Mixtape, proving that she’s able to create timeless records.

Going back to the mixtape, “The Misunderstanding of Teyana Taylor” opens with a part of a speech Lauryn Hill gave to a group of school kids many moons ago. Lauryn discussed her use of prayer to understand others so she may help them because their actions didn’t affect Lauryn. Miss Hill wasn’t the only one dropping knowledge; Wyclef also left an encouraging message to Teyana. Wyclef encouraged Ms. Taylor to invest her money wisely when she reaches the top and keep focused despite those who will try to break her spirit along the way. Let’s be honest, this advice can be used by anyone and can be served as helpful reminder whenever you hit replay.

“The Misunderstanding of Teyana Taylor” brings soothing tunes and transfixing melodies to your eardrums with lyrics that quickly enter your memory. It’s also full of songs to send your crush or current beau with songs like, “You Know” and “8th Wonder.” But with cuts like “Come On” and “Choosin’” Featuring Travis Porter, you can add it to your next BBQ playlist.
