Back when I used to contribute more frequently to Team Yee, I posted a few blogs that talked about HBO’s new show “Boardwalk Empire.” I’ve been waiting for a while for this show and it finally premiered last Sunday. The show had been getting excellent reviews and the first episode did not disappoint. “Boardwalk Empire” is set in Atlantic City, New Jersey in 1920. The main character is Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, played by Steve Buscemi. Nucky is the town’s comptroller. The first episode is set on the eve of Prohibition when Nucky and his associates hatch a scheme to bootleg liquor now that it’s illegal. Their fist sale gets interrupted by two outlaws who kill the guys and take the truck full of liquor. And so the drama begins… The episode was written by the show’s creator Terrance Winter and directed by Martin Scorsese. Check out some behind the scenes footage. “Boardwalk Empire” airs Sunday nights at 9pm EST
And if you have HBO, make sure to check out Spike Lee’s documentary “If God Is Willing & Da Creek Don’t Rise.” Hands down, one of the best documentaries I have ever seen. The film is a follow up to Spikes’s Emmy award winning “When The Levees Broke.” He goes back to New Orleans five years after Hurricane Katrina to follow the progress that has and hasn’t been made since the disaster. Lee documents the variety of issues that still plague the city from the people who have been affected most. Powerful shit.
