One of my favorite new artists, Bobby Ray, recently released this mixtape hosted by DJ Green Lantern and Don Cannon. I remember being devastated when I heard he was quitting the rap game, but fortunately he’s back! I spoke to him about the rumors, how Atlantic Records reacts when you quit and come back, and working with Marshall Mathers.
On B.O.B. vs Bobby Ray
Bobby Ray is the butterfly that emerged out of the cocoon of what BOB was. And the music that bobby ray makes is more sincere, more heartfelt, just honest, and as an artist the hardest thing to do is be honest because there’s such a magnifying glass on what you do that you really have to make sure you do the best at what you do but at the same time still be true to who you are.
On rumors of quitting:
I really had to go away and get my head clear. There were rumors that I quit. In the midst of it all just the fact that there was a response it kind of pulled me closer to the music industry because I was able to see how much of an impact or how much of an audience I had and I really had time to evaluate it and really figure out what I wanted to do.
On the label’s reaction to his early retirement:
There was definitely that period where it was like is he gonna do it again, is he going to flake out on us again. But I feel like just the work ethic that I have naturally as a person and what I put into myself as an artist it kind of speaks for itself.
On working with Eminem:
It was crazy working with him, his work ethic is basically 9 to 5. He comes in and he just works straight. He leaves for a bathroom break and comes back and just works 9 hours.
