Author Aliya S King came by “The Morning After” and gave us some juicy behind-the-scenes stories from the journalism world. If you don’t know who she is, she’s the woman who co-authored Faith Evan’s “Keep the Faith” and Frank Lucas’ memoirs “Original Gangster,” and is working on Tashera Simmons’ book, as well as Timbaland’s memoirs. In addition, she has a proposal out to Mashonda so maybe you’ll be reading that whole saga soon!
Right now though, Aliya has her fictional novel “Platinum” in stores, with the sequel already scheduled to drop August 11, 2011. “Platinum” was an idea she came up with after writing an article for Vibe Magazine entitled “The Secret Lives of Rappers Wives,” where she researched and interviewed the wives of rappers, including Ja Rule, Wyclef, Snoop, and DMX. You have to read this book and see if you can figure out who the characters are based on!
Aliya discusses how difficult it was to work with Frank Lucas and how much she loves Faith Evans. She talks about a situation with Eve when she first started at The Source 10 years ago where they almost had an altercation and had to be held back from each other.
Aliya also gave some insight into what DMX’s wife, Tashera’s book will be about. Apparently he has several kids outside of his marriage and currently has a 1 and 2 year old in Miami.
We discuss writers who may sometimes cross the line with artists, and how that can ruin your integrity.
“If it happened before the story came out or after the story came out, all bets are off. Do what you wanna do. But while you’re in the confines of I’m interviewing you for a story and I have to be objective when this story comes out, you can’t put your integrity on the line like that because how can you prove you weren’t affected by what happened between the two of you while you were writing the story.”
