Comedian Tommy Davidson stopped by The Breakfast Club before his performances this weekend at Carolines. DJ Envy asked him how he feels about Affion Crockett‘s new show. He said he hasn’t seen it and asked what everyone thought of it. They said the show was good, but talked about Affion needing more of a supporting cast. “We set the bar kind of high,” Tommy says, referring to In Living Color. “Thats the good thing about us, we were a team.”

Envy asked him if he ever thought about doing another television show. Davidson replied, “Yeah, all the time. But TV ain’t that liberal towards that. They’re in reality mode.” He talks about a new show he’s working on titled Black Dynamite. The series premieres in September on the Adult Swim network. He said he’s working on a couple other projects. “One project got Ice T, Snoop [Dogg], Sleepy Brown, George Clinton. It’s in South Beach, it’s a movie, it’s going to be hot.”

Angela Yee asked him if he’s ever going to record an album. “I’m going to let Jamie [Foxx] cool off.” Angela asked why they both can’t do music at the same time. “I don’t know,” he says. “I just kind’ve want to let him do it. Like go ahead, cycle out. I’m doing my thing. I’m traveling around the world now… I’m doing a whole ‘nother thing. Plus I’m assembling my team! My music team… I want to take my time.”

He talks about Dave Chappelle saying when he saw him perform, he told Dave that he’s “better than that” and was egging him on saying, “you a champ.” Davidson says, “The good thing about me is that I been in [comedy] for 26 years. And I’m still in my prime. I haven’t had my own movie yet. I haven’t had my own series. Its good! I’m like Satchel Paige. [He] was rookie of the year at 43.”

Charlamagne Tha God asked him if he thinks the industry will look at him like his time has passed. “I’m like George Lucas,” Tommy says. “George Lucas told me no one ever said yes to any of his movies. If I listened to the industry, I would of been gone a long time ago. The good thing about me. I never did ‘Def [Comedy] Jam.’ I never did ‘Comic View.’ I never did any of that. I’m my own brand. When you say Tommy Davidson, you cant really put me on anything. Except for maybe ‘In Living Color.’ But as far as comedy goes, stand up goes. I stand as like probably the Bruce Lee of comedy. Everybody else does karate, I do Kung Fu.”

He went on to say, “I just wanted my own voice. I didn’t want to be pigeon hold… I didn’t want to be like, black comic dude. I wanted to be like [Richard] Pryor, worldwide.” Charlamagne asked him how he plans to accomplish that going forward. “I been doing it,” he says. “I’m on my fourth special. I’m on my fourth special while people ain’t even got one. I’m on my fourth. Those are not easy to do! An hour?”
