Don't Quit Your Day Job

DRAKE Throwback: March 2007 Interview

Drake

Back in March 2007, before all the Young Money fame, the praises from other artists, and the high powered collaborations, Drake was feautured on our unsigned artist segment, “Don’t Quit Your Day Job.” A good friend of mine, Eric Sutton, sent me his music and asked that we feaure him on the segment. I thought the music was pretty good, and so did our listeners. This was when I was Cipha Sounds’ co-host, but he was out that day and Leah (my Lip Service co-host) was filling in for him.

Drake talks about growing up in Toronto and his day job on Degrassi high.  He discusses his family’s musical history (his uncle wrote for Al Green and his dad drummed for Jerry Lee Lewis).  Drake shouts out Trey Songz who is featured on his song “Replacement Girl,” and was one of the first arists to cosign him. Leah asked him if his music was used in Degrassi but he said he wanted to keep his music separate from the show.

1st Song: Replacement Girl (feat. Trey Songz)

Now you get to hear the listeners’ hilarious critiques.  One caller liked the song and said his wife was a big fan of Degrassi, and another thought it sounded straight but that he sounded too much like Bow Wow:

2nd Song: City Is Mine

Next Drake gives advice to other upcoming artists.  He said you have to take constructive criticism and that you should never quit.  First caller said the song was fire, one listener said she was shocked because she thought it was going to be some popcorn rap after watching the show and the last caller was just happy he didn’t have “Lil” or “Young” in his name. How ironic!

Clearly Drake was destined for stardom, even our finicky listeners had to give him props!
