Melanie Fiona Talks Image, Grammy Noms

Melanie Fiona sat with The Breakfast Club to talk about her status as a singer, Grammy nominations, and her stance on creating a reality show.

After a few jokes about Melanie showing up late to the interview, the “4am” singer laughed and took it all on stride. As a result, Charlamagne suggest that Melanie blame her being late from being Black. “All right, you give it CP time, I’m there.”

Angela got right into Melanie’s singing for thoughts on those who think she does not receive enough recognition; she’s too underrated. “I take that as a compliment really; I rather be underrated than overrated, truly because people will always have their opinions. I always feel it’s important to have somewhere to go and grow. If people still feel like there is a another level I need to be at and grow –because I feel so blessed, I feel so happy to be where I’m at, the things that I’ve done. It’s pretty cool a lot of people who are more well-known or famous haven’t done some of the cool stuff that I’ve done.”

While Charlamagne quickly peered at Melanie’s tush, he asked if her label has ever put pressure on her to have a sexier image.

“I’ve definitely struggle with that, I’ve struggled with that before I got a deal. I struggled with that when I got a deal, I still struggle with that. But if I were to carry myself to someone that took the same route, I’d say Alicia Keys never sold out. Alicia Keys never took off her clothes she sat at her piano she played her music.” However, Melanie does acknowledge that Alicia’s been selectively sexy. “And there’s a time and place for everything. There’s certain events that I’ll go and be like ‘Melanie wow look at Melanie she did that.’”

Soon Melanie explained what concerns her when it comes to women needing to project a sexy image in the industry.

“What happens with female artists, -what bothers me is that we have to fit this ‘thing’ because of what somebody else did with their success. Somebody else got naked they got successful so that’s what you should do and I’m like no that not good.”

With the advent of reality television, Angela asked if she’s ever been approached to create a reality series and if she would.

“There’s a lot of things that come up but I’m just not into all of that if this is a reality show I’m gonna show the reality of what this is really about. This is not about fighting -I just feel the portrayal of women right now in reality television is just not it, especially for Black women. I come from a production company that’s owned by a woman and what we have to do on professional level just to command respect just to get to where we got has been a real story. So if people down to know what that’s about I’m down to do that but no of this. We’ll make it a documentary; we’ll make it a documentary series.

The Grammy’s are a big deal and Melanie’s racked up two nominations this year, which hold great meaning to her because of her coming sophomore album.

“I’m nominated for two Grammy’s this year again, this is my fourth time getting nominated, I’m very, very excited. [I was nominated] for my song I did with Cee-Lo this year “Fool For You.”

“It’s really exciting because when you’re an artist and you’re working between projects you –my first album came out in 2009- you never really know what happens in between. How are you gonna stay above water, what are you gonna do and I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of a few great projects that have earned me some Grammy nods in between and hopefully the album comes out this year and earns its own.”

  2. Great jokes, great vibe in the interview. Insightful stuff on image, and Melanie’s really radiant, reppin’ Toronto.

Amazing look at the common pressure of V-Day, and some pretty… interesting tales of ex-boyfriends – lol.

    Rock on.
